Date of Defense 2010-03-29 Availability unrestricted Abstract Current policies, identification practices, and assessment measures used to identify gifted and talented students vary significantly across the 50 states of the United States. The present study conducted a national state by state survey for the purpose of collecting information on the nature and availability of policy provisions for gifted students. Specifically, questionnaire items were developed to address the following 3 areas: definitions of gifted, required identification methods, and alternative practices and services for special sub-groups of gifted students. Gifted coordinators from each state were contacted and asked to respond to eight specific questions. Results indicate that state policies are neither uniform nor comprehensive, although the majority of states have developed guidelines related to gifted services. Without statutory mandates, gifted services and practices lack coordination between the local, state, and national levels. Implications, recommendations, and areas for future research are addressed.Files
