Abstract ABSTRACT Henrique de Curitiba Morozowicz has established himself as a prominent composer not only in the state of Paraná, where he was born, but also in the country of Brazil. Having composed to date over 150 works, his musical language is very accessible, imbued with Brazilian rhythms and folk music in a remarkably elegant way. Of Polish descent, Morozowicz was raised in a home filled with European traditions and in an especially artistic family. His mother was a pianist and his father a dancer and choreographer, both from Polish families. The city of Curitiba, where Morozowicz has lived most of his life, is the second largest Polish community in the world. A city crowded with immigrants from many countries in Europe, Curitiba combines the Brazilian way of life with a mixture of races and cultures. Italians, Ukrainians, Germans, Poles, and many others have come to Curitiba throughout the past two centuries to find a home in this place where they now belong. The contributions that these immigrants have brought to the city are of immeasurable value and the face of Curitiba has gradually changed because of their influence. The music of Henrique Morozowicz reflects, in many ways, the environment in which he lives. A musician who has dedicated more than fifty years to composing, Morozowicz has, as well as his family, enriched the cultural life of the city of Curitiba, the state of Paraná, and the entire country. This treatise explores Morozowicz’s family, his Polish background with some discussion on Polish immigration in Curitiba, and his compositional style. In order to make the latter more comprehensible, a further analysis of four of his compositions is included as an important addition to this paper. This treatise is a contribution toward the initiative of spreading Morozowicz’s music beyond the borders of the state of Paraná and the country of Brazil.
