The author will discuss the history and operatic traditions of cross-gendered role assignments as a background to examining Strauss’s reasons for writing male roles for women to sing, and also explores the vocal and dramatic characteristics of the two roles. Recordings, musical examples, and quotes from performers who created and sing these roles will be included to support the author’s conclusions.Files
