Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the literature being played by Florida high school bands at Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) Concert Band Music Performance Assessments (MPA). The FBA Concert Music List consists of 1,489 pieces by 436 composers. Florida high school bands performed 327 (21.9%) of these pieces for adjudication in 2007. Playing those pieces, Florida high school bands averaged an overall MPA score of 1.76. Focus was then placed on bands that played “Significant Literature” as designated by the FBA Concert Music List and those that did not. Overall ratings received were then statistically compared. Results showed that while the majority of the music played was not designated as significant literature on the FBA Concert Music List, more than half of the bands performed at least one piece of Significant Literature. Bands that performed Significant Literature earned an average MPA rating of 1.62 while bands that did not perform Significant Literature averaged an MPA rating of 1.95. The t Test showed a statistically significant difference t (422) = 3.73, p ≤ .05 between these two groups.
