As nations have become the norm in modern day society, nationalism has become detrimental to international law, which protects the powers of sovereignty. In the latter part of the twentieth century, secessionist groups and the international community alike have disputed the call for independence by citing the right to majority rule, despite legally bound borders. This paper examines the history of nationalism, with particular emphasis on the cases Serbia and Armenia. It explores the history of two disputed regions-Kosovo and Nagorno Karabakh, and analyzes those tragic events in the 1990’s that placed them on the forefront of international relations.Files
