Abstract
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) field mapping is a highly accurate tool that can be used to determine the homogeneity of the magnetic field of a strong laboratory magnet. Typically, an NMR signal is observed from a small experimental sample as it traces a helical path inside the magnet with the help of a stepper motor. However, high field powered magnets such as those used at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory are subject to noise from power supplies and cooling water. To the effect of noise on the field map, an NMR reference probe that remains at a fixed location is added to reduce the effect of temporal fluctuation on the field map. The NMR mapping system is interfaced to a spectrometer having dual digital receivers and the tests are carried out on a 7.1 Tesla superconducting magnet. This research is an important step toward effectively utilizing powered magnets for high resolution NMR experiments.
