Abstract This treatise represents a study of Justin Holland, one of the most prolific American Guitarists of the nineteenth century. This document is divided into three parts: The first part discusses the popularity of the guitar in the nineteenth century, beginning with the instrument’s rise of popularity in Europe to its beginnings in the United States. The second part is devoted to the musical career of Justin Holland; that is divided into three periods: his early life, his time in Boston, and his career in Cleveland. The third part is a close study of Holland’s Modern Method for the Guitar, which contains explanations and images from the method with additional illustrations from other guitar methods published in the nineteenth century.
