Date of Defense 2008-06-12 Availability unrestricted Abstract The Retained Earnings Maximizing Non-Profit Enterprise (REM) is a new business model that approximates a hyper socially responsible firm by selling goods that people would ordinarily buy and then donates the retained earnings to charity. The importance of the REM business model is that because the non-profit sector is growing and in need of new capital, the traditional non-profit business model is vulnerable to fluctuations in the level of voluntary contributions. Discourse on the nature of the REM and implications for its growth culminate in a specific example being pursued on the Florida State University campus. “Rhythm” is a coffee shop being built in the Presbyterian University Center that will follow the design of the REM Enterprise. The market for rhythm and other competitors in the FSU specialty coffee market are organized using the traditional Structure, Conduct and Performance paradigm from Industrial Organization.Files
