Date of Defense 2005-06-27 Availability unrestricted Abstract This thesis will show the degree of influence that the philosophies of John Locke had upon three subsequent eighteenth century writers: Daniel Defoe, Samuel Johnson, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. I contend that while aspects of Locke’s ideology can be found in the major fiction of all three writers, his ideas are modified by each author to mesh with the messages each attempted to drive home in his own writing and in order to accord with their own personal beliefs, despite many critics’ claim to the contrary.Files
