The impetus for this research study is to identify fertility considerations of men in the decision to have a child or a subsequent child. The men in the study are single and ages range from 18- 45 years. Demographic variables of these men are examined. Additionally, male and female considerations are compared with the use of the SE-8 subscale created by the National Survey of Household Families. The subscale uses a list of 16 considerations affecting the decision to have a child.
The Betty Neuman Systems Model is used as a conceptual model in the decision of fertility for the male respondents. The average respondent is white and between the ages of 20-24 years of age. The highest level of education for most of the males is the completion of a high school diploma (n=654). The considerations of “having someone to love” and “uncertainty about the ability to support a child” were more frequently chosen by the male respondents to affect the decision to have a child. A correlation of age, income, and education was performed between the 16 considerations of the SE-8 subscale. Additionally, a comparison of the considerations for men and women was performed. Men most frequently chose “having someone to love” and women were most concerned the “uncertainty about the ability to support a child”.
