Abstract
Wireless technology has been advancing at a rapid pace. There is an urgent need to secure the wireless local area networks from the hackers. The major goals of this thesis are to provide a survey of the state-of-the-art wireless networking and to investigate ways to secure the wireless local area networks. This thesis begins with the review of important wireless technologies and information networks that are being used around the world ranging from 3G, 4G and wireless local area networks. Specific topics include history of wireless communications, status of wireless technologies in the second and third generations, multiple access communications, modulation techniques such as CDMA, TDMA, FDMA and switching and routing techniques involved with a primary focus on security of the wireless systems. Various types of security protocols are analyzed and their advantages and disadvantages discussed.
