Abstract This dissertation analyzes the relationship between the surrealist painters of the twentieth century and the verbal images of Herman Melville in his masterpiece Moby-Dick. The work examines Melville’s lifelong affinity for the visual arts, his strange visual images, and the relationship he has to the surrealists of the subsequent century.
