Abstract
Carlisle Floyd (b. 1926) and Phyllis Curtin (b. 1921) have had a longstanding association, including four operatic endeavors. Their collaborative efforts started with Susannah in 1954, which led to three subsequent operas. Floyd composed roles for Curtin in Wuthering Heights (1958), The Passion of Jonathan Wade (1962), and Flower and Hawk (1972). This treatise is organized in four sections. Character analyses of the four roles comprise the first section of the treatise, followed by a discussion of two themes that unite the characters in the second section: betrayals and strengths. Observations about the performance aspects of the roles are discussed in the third section. Synopses, intended to provide context for the soprano characters, as well as a chart of role requirements, and interview transcripts comprise the appendix.
