Abstract
To complete my Master of Arts degree I am submitting Part One of my novel-in-progress Horse Show Circuit. This first section presents the novel’s set up of characters, setting, and situation. The novel is written in the tradition of journey-type stories, going back as far as Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales to the more recent works of Kerouac’s On The Road and Ellis’ Less Than Zero. Other influences include the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, how they explored specific social worlds and the dynamic that existed within that particular echelon. In my novel, the setting includes competition within the world of equestrian show jumping. Certain elements, such as the horse murders, are grounded in historical facts from the 1980s.
